The Power of Sleep in Your Beauty Routine

Your precious zzz’s do more than just empower your energy levels for the day- sleep can also help keep the appearance of your skin in good shape. If you deprive yourself of sleep, a lot of biological events occur that can have a great toll on your beauty. For one, if you get less sleep, your body starts to release a ton of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol leads to more stress, which acts in a domino effect to trigger more inflammation in your body. Inflammation leads to tired looking skin that ages a lot faster than it’s supposed to. Even more severe, chronic problems in sleep can cause skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis or eczema, which leads to unsightly looking skin. Here are some other reasons why you should ensure that you get the vital eight hours of rest each night:
- Less sleep means an accelerated aging process. Sleep allows the cells in your skin to turnover, repair and revitalize. I’ve noticed several times when I got more sleep than usual, my acne would clear up faster. Additionally, during deep sleep, any serious damage to cells done during the day is reversed. This only happens during deep sleep, which is why it is important to allow yourself eight hours to snooze- otherwise you won’t get to the stages of deep sleep.
- Sleep helps rebalance the hydration in your skin. Balanced hydration is important for a couple of reasons-one, it keeps the tone and texture of your skin even. Two, more hydration means a more youthful plump added to your skin. Poor hydration also leads to dark pools under your eyes, which is why when you get less sleep you usually accumulate eye circles and puffiness around the eye area.
- Less snoozing translates to dull skin and less translucency. By skimping out on sleep, you deprive your skin from the natural beauty that it’s capable of possessing. During lack of sleep, collagen starts to break down in your skin and the hyaluronic acid in your skin starts to deplete. These ingredients together are very vital in giving your skin a vibrant glow and quality of smoothness.
- Less sleep adds up (in pounds). Not getting enough sleep generally contributes to weight gain. Chemically, sleep makes you feel less urges to eat and keeps everything in balance. This is important, because if you are off balance in appetite and sleep, this generally leads to some serious skin problems that can prolong for a long duration.
If you have trouble sleeping, it might be worthy to invest in some techniques that can help you get sleepy earlier. If you think you may have a serious sleep problem, such as insomnia, it’s important to consult a doctor. Sleep is not just important for beauty, as complications can have health repercussions as well.
